Compact Folders & Speed Up Outlook Express

Outlook Express

This tip is for those of you who use Outlook Express (OE) for your email.  Like most database programs, OE does not actually remove an item from the database file when you delete a message.  Instead it merely tags the item for removal at a later time, mainly when you next compact your folders.

Until then, the deleted message is still occupying disk space, which can cause OE to perform more slowly when accessing the database file.  To recover disk space and keep your files as small as possible, you need to compact your folders on a regular basis..

Instructions

  • Open OE → File → Folder → Compact All Folders

This process may take several minutes.  If there is an error, simply re-open & try it again until it completes successfully.

NOTE: This tip is for Outlook Express only.

Setting Multiple Home Pages

Browser

Browser

With the advent of tabbed browsing on Mozilla Firefox (FF) & Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7), we can set multiple home pages to open upon launch of the browser.

This is useful if you open your web browser & immediately start opening other tabs or windows from your favorites.

Instructions

  • Launch your web browser (FF or IE) & open all the tabs you would like to have opened automatically next time
  • FF: Tools → Options → Main → Under Startup Click Use Current Pages → OK
  • IE7: Tools → Options → Under Homepage Click Use Current → OK

Advanced – You can manually enter the URL’s

  • FF: Separate each URL with a pipe |
  • IE7: Separate each URL with a new line

NOTE: Every time you hit HOME, this will cause these pages to be re-opened even if they are already open.  However, the more pages you set, the slower it’ll be opening them all.

Add Internet prefixes & suffixes automatically

www

www

Here’s a neat tip for accessing a Web page from any Windows address bar.  You can enter any string of characters in an address bar and then press CTRL-ENTER.  Windows will automatically add both “www” and “.com”, and then search for the page on the Web.

This works with both Mozilla FireFox & Internet Explorer.

Example

  • Try it with google, yahoo or cnn

Embed Web Links in your emails

Web Link

Web Link

It is actually very easy to send someone a clickable link.  Please see below for more info.

You can preface the address with http:// (2 forward slashes) & any text written after that will become a click-able link.

Or you can simply Copy/Paste an address from your web browser
Alternatively if you are using Outlook Express/Outlook you can try CTRL-K

Example

  • http://www.unitek.ca/ or click HERE
